Globalization (English)

Globalization can be defined as the development of closer economic, cultural and political relations among all countries of the world because of travel, English as lingua franca and the Internet. For this reason I fully agree with Kelsey Timmerman’s quotation, „Globalization isn’t something that just happens to economies. It happens to people.“

That is why this comment is going to deal not only with the impact of globalization on companies, but also how it affects people.

Globalization is a threat to local languages and diversity. On the one hand, English as lingua franca creates closer economic, cultural and political relations among all countries across the globe because people from different parts of the world can communicate using one single language. On the other hand, however, it threatens the development of someone’s own identity, because as Gandhi once said, „our languages [are] the reflection of ourselves.“ In his speech of February 4, 1916, for example, Gandhi stresses the importance of one common language for the whole of India to replace the foreign language of English as a means of communication. As an example, he refers to the fact that every Indian youth because he reached his knowledge through the English language, lost at least six precious years of life. Apart from that, he also mentions that the congress audience in Bombay was better able to follow the speakers who spoke in Hindi.

In addition, globalization is harmful to the environment because it is also responsible for climate change. That has to do with the fact that companies, which want to grow internationally, need to allow their employees to participate in global business meetings, often directly on site rather than via video conference. More importantly, businessmen often travel to these meetings by private business jets, which catalyze climate change because only a few people can fly with them, with the result that energy consumption per kilometer and emissions are five to ten times higher than those of a normal airplane. People who are often affected have nothing to do with the companies, they neither work for them nor consume their products. These people, for example from Africa or the rainforest, are forced to leave their homes and flee because of food shortages or because natural disasters (caused by climate change) destroy their space to live.

On the one hand, outsourcing and offshoring have benefits for companies because they can produce more products and reduce costs at the same time, which is beneficial for international competition. On the other hand, these strategies have a devastating impact on people’s lives. Apart from workers, who live in industrialized countries, losing their jobs, people from developing countries have to work under poor working conditions and for low wages. Even though these people have been freed from extreme poverty thanks to their jobs, they still live in constant danger. The discount clothing store „KiK“, which puts profit first, tragically confirms the argument mentioned above. In order to buy jeans for less than 8 Euros in Germany, 255 employees of the clothing factory „Ali Enterprises“, which had provided goods for KiK, lost their lives in a fire in Pakistan on September 11, 2012.

In conclusion, I believe that globalization is right and important because it is not only necessary for my way of life, but also for the lifestyle of millions of other people. On the contrary, it is crucial to keep an eye on the adverse aspects and consequences of globalization.

For this reason, the comment has only dealt with the negative effects of globalization on people as a small reminder because it concerns not only companies, which are directly involved in it, but also people who do not benefit from globalization.

Globalisierung (Deutsch)

It happens to people.)

So betont Gandhi in seiner Rede vom 4.
